Lambing time 2025
Posted on
It's been a long time since I posted on the blog, I am working as a midwife and this last week had some annual leave to help on the site and with lambing.
There are around twenty sheep left to lamb. Last week we had a set of quads. The sheep had been scanned for triplets and that is what Alan delivered. A couple of hours later we went back out to check them and found she had give birth to a fourth lamb! Two of them have been re-mothered on to sheep that had lambed single lambs. Using the 'wet mothering technique' where when you catch the sheep giving birth to her lamb you put the spare lamb into a bucket of warm water to wet him/her and then rub all the birth fluids onto the spare lamb so they smell the same.
We had a sheep with a bad case of 'ring womb' this week and ended up taking her to the vets. This is when they don't fully dilate and they need working on. Our local vets had two students working with the vet so it was a good experience for them too!
We also had a sheep at the vets with a cesarean, which I found interesting comparing it to a human procedure!
This weekend we shall be putting quite a few out into the fields that surround the site as some of the older ones are stronger to cope with the weather and we are running short of space inside. There is also less chance of infections such as Joint Ill and Waterymouth in the lambs.
